Hongkong Post serves 2.99 million residential and business addresses across the territory. In 2011/12, we handled 1.31 billion mail items, representing an increase of 3.1% over the 2010/11 level and an average daily traffic volume of 3.60 million mail items.
In 2011/12, local mail continued to account for the majority (83.7%) of the traffic handled by Hongkong Post, and registered an increase of 2.6% over 2010/11. International mail, which accounted for the remaining 16.3% of the total mail traffic, registered a 5.6% increase over 2010/11. The major destinations for outgoing international letters and parcels were the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada and Mainland China.
Hongkong Post recorded a total revenue of HK$5,014 million in 2011/12, an increase of 6.2% over the previous year. This was mainly attributed to the increase in Speedpost, bulk air mail traffic, as well as the growth in philatelic sales. The growth of operating revenue, however, was more than off-set by the rise in the operating costs, at 10.4%, resulting in an operating loss of HK$50 million for the year. Staff cost, air conveyance cost and terminal dues recorded the most significant increases. The rate of return on average net fixed assets was -1.9% in 2011/12.
