Philately and stamp collection continues to attract strong interest in Hong Kong.
Hongkong Post issues a series of special stamps annually. Each cover features a unique theme that attracts the interest of both local and overseas collectors – enthusiasts and professionals alike.
Nine sets of special stamps and three stamp sheetlets were issued in 2010/11. These covered a wide range of themes and special moments in Hong Kong life. They commemorated the city's participation in the Expo 2010 in Shanghai and in the LONDON 2010 International Philatelic Exhibition. Others highlighted local street life and city districts that have been rejuvenated. Hong Kong's diversity of natural habitats were represented in illustrstions of four endemic species and five of the city's lighthouses were portrayed along with views of Hong Kong, as seen through the eyes of youngsters.
Commemorative stamps were issued celebrating centenary anniversaries for the city's rail services and for the first powered flight over Hong Kong. The railway series marked a first for Hongkong Post and included a lenticular stamp where the first steam train was shown with moving effect.
Through our stamps, we often pay tribute to people who have made important contributions to society. Definitive Stamp Sheetlet (No.1) was issued to congratulate Professor Charles K. Kao on his award of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics while our stamp, "Volunteerism", which incorporates the first heart-shaped stamp to be issued in Hong Kong, recognises the selfless contribution of volunteers. Hongkong Post made a donation of HK$200,000 to the Charles K. Kao Foundation for Alzheimer's Disease Limited through the issue of a souvenir booklet containing the Definitive Stamp Sheetlet and a bunch of optical fibres.
The "Year of the Rabbit" series is the finale in our third Lunar New Year stamp series, and together with the Gold and Silver Stamp Sheetlet and Flock Stamps, added to the atmosphere of Chinese New Year celebrations this year. The Twelve Animals of the Lunar New Year Cycle stamp sheetlet and a limited-edition collectible set with a 24K gold plated reproduction were keenly sought after by both philatelists and members of the general public.
Hongkong Post is actively revitalising interest in stamps and stamp collecting within the community through a series of exciting promotions and advertisements. To coincide with Christmas and Chinese New Year, a range of philatelic products and the series "Heartwarming Stamps" customised service were promoted in shopping malls as potential gift choices.
We have continued to expand our customised gift service for corporate clients. The service, which offers a one-stop stamp-themed souvenir gift service from design to production, has been well-received by the private sector as well as government departments and community organisations. The service has also helped raise awareness of Hongkong Post's philatelic products.
