Hongkong Post aims to cultivate a highly motivated workforce that enjoys a high level of job satisfaction through our “World Class People” strategy. We are committed to providing all our staff with training opportunities to ensure they have the abilities required to do their jobs professionally and to a high degree of competence.

Training and development

During the year, we continued to deliver a wide range of training programmes to enhance the competence and commitment of our workforce. There were 29,416 training days in 2009/10.

A series of new refresher courses designed to reinforce and update core knowledge for both frontline staff and supervisors has been introduced. We also launched a new supervisory skills training programme aimed at enhancing the competency in leadership and awareness of the supervisory role of experienced postal officers to prepare them to take on responsibility of a higher rank.

To sustain and further promote our customer service culture, we launched a number of new training initiatives and campaigns during the year. In support of the “Go the Extra Mile for You” programme for counter staff, we organised a series of training workshops with emphasis on enhancing a positive service mindset and a “can-do” attitude. Over 600 staff members attended the training. In addition, we also developed an in-house customer service training module on complaints and enquiries skills for postal officers working in the back office to equip them with customer service knowledge in order to enhance their work competency for career development.

During the year, we continued to offer a range of training and development programmes to managers of different ranks. We organised tailor-made management workshops on financial management, contract law and industrial engineering. We also arranged for senior officers to attend a renowned Executive Management Programme, comprising a series of workshops on leadership, strategic analysis, marketing and the management of financial issues. Some of our senior officers were also sponsored to attend an Executive MBA Programme.

Apart from giving induction training to new recruits at managerial level, we also commissioned the Asian-Pacific Postal College to provide them with a two-week in-house training programme on international postal operations. Following this, the new recruits were able to widen their international exposure through visits to SingPost and Pos Malaysia.

Health and safety programmes

Hongkong Post was the first government department to implement a pilot Work Safety Behaviour Programme in 2008/09. The 5S Programme and the Safety Management System are now in place in all Hongkong Post workplaces.

To maintain a high level of safety performance, a two-year Internal Safety Audit Programme has been rolled out to boost safety awareness and emphasise shared responsibility for safety.
