Hongkong Post has a proud heritage of providing postal services for 169 years, during which it has built up a high level of recognition both locally and globally. In 1995, we successfully transformed from a traditional postal service provider to a forward-looking, customer-focused and market-oriented trading fund operation government department. Through leveraging on technology to improve productivity, we strive to provide the community with a reliable, efficient and affordable postal service.
In 2009/10, we handled an average of 3.57 million mail items every day, with the volume of local mail decreasing and the volume of international mail increasing by about the same proportion.
As a trading fund government department, we remain focused on achieving good financial performance. We continued to introduce new business initiatives while expanding and diversifying the services we offer. For instance, we refined the Hongkong Post Circular Service in the past year, and we expanded the range of agency services we undertake for the government at our post offices. Our efforts in collaboration with the China Post Group to expand our cross-border services are also making good progress.
While the wide use of the Internet has caused a drop in the volume of letters, Hongkong Post is tapping into new business opportunities arising from the online revolution. We have continued to develop our online shopping platform ShopThruPost, revamping its website and streamlining its accessibility, in a move that is encouraging more and more shoppers to have their goods delivered by Hongkong Post. Our recently launched eCentre is also generating new business by making it simpler and easier for online traders to organise the bulk posting of their goods.
All in all, through harnessing e-commerce and collaborating with other postal administrations, Hongkong Post is striving to ensure that our postal service business remains sustainable, while strengthening our position as a world-class postal service provider in the minds and hearts of the people we serve.
